12/05/10
Coundon Court 2-2 Christ the King (A)
With only 11 players available again, it was another difficult evening and two sides playing poorly contributed to a pretty awful game. The pitch was terrible, long in places and bare in others and really didn't help matters.
The boys looked in total control early on and might have taken a very early lead. Ross beating the keeper to get on the end of a right wing cross, his sidefoot finish was whacked off the line and hit Steve and nearly went in.
Next Ross was in the action again, a clever free kick from Josh put him in and the keeper made a fine save. Against the run of play, CTK took the lead, the midfielder afforded far too much space and time to hit a 25 yard shot over Damon.
The boys responded though ,Josh's corner was headed in by Daniel and just a couple of minutes later Luke almost did the same only to be denied by a really good save. The last chance of the half fell to Steve, a corner was headed out but he was unable to keep his shot down.
The second half saw CTK more prominent in the early stages but they created little and Damon did not have a shot to save though it was much the same at the other end. With just 12 minutes to go the two centre halves failed to deal with a bouncing ball and Daniel's weak clearance fell to the CTK winger and he found the net.
To the boy's credit their heads didn't drop and immediately it was level again with one of the few bits of quality football. Steve's super pass expertly finished by Liam. There were chances at either end as the Lions pressed for the win, the CTK centre half spun and shot but it was well wide and at the other end Liam forced a fine save from a close range header.
Definitely a case of two points dropped as this was a game we ought to have won.
Man of the Match - Liam/Josh - Both worked incredibly hard
9/05/10
Coundon Court 1-4 Cov Jag (H)
Cov Jag came to Coundon Court to complete our home fixtures and cruised to victory.
With a strong breeze at their backs they made the early running and took the lead with a 20 yard free kick Josh's miskick flew up and hit him on the underside of his arm and the referee deemed that worthy of a free kick. 1-0 down and the boys confidence built up recently after 4-games unbeaten was immediately shattered. It was 2-0 10 minutes later, a good cross was well headed in from close range. However the boys rallied and had their best spell of the game, some incisive passing saw Steve and George denied by the keeper with the ball falling to Liam but his shot flew wide.
With only 4 minutes to the interval Jag added a third. A foul on George went unpunished and the winger broke and hit a terrific shot from 25 yards that found the corner.
Immediately though the best move of the match involving Daniel, Sam and Liam put Steve away and the quality of his finish matched that of the build up.
3-1 at half time with the prospect of the elements in our favour. The boys pressed forward in the early stages and had Liam's free kick got a better connection from Steve just 6 yards out then it might have made some difference. However Jag were comfortable after that and always looked the more likely side to score. They did score a fourth, a third goal from outside the box, another direct free kick that sailed into the top corner.
We didn't play well and put this one behind us and move on.
Man of the match - Daniel - Developing into a good centre half
5/05/10
Coundon Court 0-0 Chapelfield Colts (A)
The boys showed a grit and determination to their play to leave a visit to cup finalists Chapelfield Colts with a share of the points. Down to only 11 players due to injury and other commitments, the boys thoroughly deserved a draw and were slightly disappointed not to have taken all 3.
Most of the early action was in the midfield area as the teams tried to find a way though good, organised defences, it was the Lions though who had the better of possession but the final ball was just lacking. Liam put that right with a terrific turn on the halfway line and his ball to Josh was sublime, matched only by Josh's first touch taking him clear into the penalty area. Unfortunately he beat the keeper but rolled his shot inches wide of the post. Next Ross' free kick caused indecision from the keeper but nobody could stab the ball in. Then Liam was sent clear on the left but on his less favoured side shot wide of the near post. Chaps had a couple of dangerous moments, one corner was headed over from 6-yards out under pressure from Daniel and then a combination of Mitch and Damon smuggled the ball clear when the striker was ready to shoot.
The second half saw Chaps work the goalkeeper more although the better chances came at the other end. Damon flung himself to his left to turn one 20-yard shot wide and then to his right to clutch a close range header. He then had to be alert as another long range shot threatened. Perhaps the best chance of the half though fell to Luke who worked really hard throughout. Build up play on the left saw the ball reach Luke via George but his left foot shot from 14 yards lacked power. It was Liam, who went closest after Steve was denied by the onrushing goalkeeper, but with him stranded Liam hooked a 25 yard effort over him and just wide.
A good performance under difficult circumstances and a much needed clean sheet.
Man of the Match - Liam/Luke - Both worked incredibly hard
18/04/10
Coundon Court 2-1 Copsewood Colts (A)
The boys made it three wins on the bounce with a 2-1 away victory at Copsewood Colts after a rather scrappy performance. An injury time consolation was Copsewood's only reply to a goal in each half from Liam.
The boys started the better of the sides though neither side were able to play any attractive football with the ball being contested in the midfield area. As ever, Sam coming out on top in that area. However the lions looked continually lively going forward, with Liam a real livewire causing problems whenever he had the ball. Indeed it was after a foul on him just outside the area, that Coundon took the lead, the striker picking himself up to fire through the wall and keeper to make it 1-0. From there the boys ought to have gone on and established a commanding lead. Steve was proving a great outlet on the left and he had three efforts in a five minute spell finding the keepers midriff after good retrieving by George and then firing into the keeper at the near post after Sam sent him away.
The best effort though fell to Liam after Steve again beat the full back, his cross found Liam whose shot was destined for the corner only to be denied by a terrific one handed save.
At the other end the boys were defending well as a unit and Damon had only one shot to deal with, a deflected effort that he got everything behind.
Just before the break it was nearly 2-0, Josh stole clear to get on the end of a free kick but couldn't get enough on it to beat the keeper.
The second half saw the boys continue to create chances but were unable to establish a two goal cushion and Copsewood were able to create a couple of chances of their own, Mitch and Daniel both put in brave blocks before Dan's mistimed header allowed the striker a shot on goal but he fired into the side netting.
Daniel had the chance to make amends and extend the lead but headed wide with the goal gaping, Steve again though was at the heart of the action and he got on the end of Ben's cross after good work from Luke, and seemed to have scored but the keeper got a hand on it and it was cleared off the line. He then hit the bar stealing in at the far post and latching onto Liam's pass before firing over first time. A second goal did come and it was from the penalty spot, George with a cross that appeared to put Liam in but the defender's hand deflected it away and top scorer LIAM despatched the penalty.
Copsewood pressed and did get one back a long ball wasn't defended well and the striker made no mistake from the edge of the box, however there was barely time to kick off though Steve was still able to waltz through though shot wide from 20 yards.
Another satisfying victory, but not as polished a performance as we have had in the previous two weeks.
Man of the Match - Steve - Really lively performance
14/04/10
Coundon Court 2-0 Coventry Sphinx (A)
A second fine performance in four days enabled the boys to register back to back wins for only the second time this season. A first half goal for Liam and a second half header from Ross earned a fully deserved three points.
It was the Lions who started the brighter showing the confidence that the win over Chapelfield Colts had brought them. Josh and Sam were having the better of the midfield battle, Sam acting not only as ballwinner but showing a real quality with his passing. With Ben helping to shut out the dangerous left winger and Steve showing his array of passing skills, the boys were playing some attractive football. It might have culminated in a goal, Ross' probing pass forward found Liam in space in the area but the striker's shot was only inches past the far post. Liam was in the action again with another drive that had the goalkeeper scrambling across his goal. Some lovely football then released Ben on the right and his low drive was again only just wide.
It can be that the team in the ascendancy are hit with a sucker punch on the break and it was nearly the case, The striker just got to a long through ball before Damon but under pressure his shot lacked power and Daniel calmly cleared away. Sphinx were having a good spell of possession but clear cut chances were hard to come by, though the striker got the wrong side of the defence momentariliy before Daniel headed clear.
However George and Liam were both looking threatening with every attack and it was no surprise to see Liam open the scoring. A corner was half cleared and as a second cross came in LIAM dropped to the edge of the box where he collected the ball and hit a viciously swerving drive that found the corner via the inside of the post.
In the five minutes left of the first half there were no further alarms and it was a deserved lead at the break.
The boys pressed on in the second half looking for a second goal, Steve was denied by a fine save from the keeper and Daniel should have scored with a header from a corner, missing the ball when completely free. ROSS though made no mistake, Ben's delivery was perfect and the full back steered his header inside the far post. He might have had a second from another corner but this time mistimed his header when unmarked.
Sphinx were in no mood to lay down and had a good spell which almost resulted in a goal back, the winger got in a terrific cross and the header smacked against the bar; the striker was first to react and his shot had beaten Damon but not Daniel and it deflected wide for a corner. The pattern was set with both sides having good spells of pressure, George, Liam and Steve were all denied by last ditch blocks whilst Daniel, Mitch, Ross and Adam were terrific in defence. The team effort was summed up by Luke in the dying minutes, when Daniel was beaten it was his perfectly timed tackle that halted the striker.
A really good win and a very pleasing performance, from back to front we were excellent. More of the same please boys!
Man of the Match - In a true team performance there were any number of candidates, the nod though went to Daniel - Really starting to enjoy the centre half position
11/04/10
Coundon Court 2-1 Chaplefield Colts (H)
The boys put in probably their best performance of the season to deservedly overcome high flying Chapelfield Colts. Two second half goals seemed to have secured an impressive victory before a last minute Chaps goal provided a nervy finale.
There was a noticeable lack of confidence in the way that the boys started and it was Chaps who made the early running, the pacey right winger got behind the back four but sliced his shot wide from the angle, he then broke clear again but with Damon beaten, Daniel calmly cleared away from the line. The centre half was again in the action as he recovered magnificently to head away from the persistent number 8. The boys weathered the early pressure and began to play with more assurance, the two Sam's were pressurising the central midfielders and winning possession in good areas, particularly Sam L who seemed to be everywhere. Josh and Steve were lively in the wide areas and Liam and George were combining well without creating chances.
As the half continued though the boys grew in confidence and the last 15 minutes of the first period belonged to them. Steve showed lovely footwork to outwit the right back and his left foot cross was dangerous and the Chaps defence scrambled it clear in nervous fashion.
Some fine play from the right side twice put Josh into good areas and on the latter occasion although his shot beat the keeper, it was easily cleared away from the line. Sam L also got forward striking wide of the target and the quality of the final ball was just lacking a little. Chaps still threatened but good defending was limiting their chances although the left winger did cut in and fire from 25 yards over the bar.
Goalless at the break and there was a belief that if we continued to believe in ourselves that we could go on and get something out of the game.
Chaps came out with added resolve and had the ascendancy for the first 3-4 minutes but after that the boys continued to press them back and dominate territory and possession. Clear chances were hard to come by though Josh fired narrowly over, however the pressure was building. Sam L continued to get into good positions and had two shooting opportunities both with his left foot and both were a foot wide.
With 20 minutes left he then had an even better chance as the ball broke 15 yards from goal, though his shot was on target the centre half was again on hand to clear. Chaps have certainly improved this season and were always a threat going forward, this time it was the left winger who got free but his poked effort was well handled by Damon.
15 minutes to go and the deadlock was finally broken, Daniel made a fine tackle to win possession and his pass found Liam in space, his ball into George enabled the striker to turn and race away from the centre half and his finish was terrific.
The boys sought a second and Josh was very close to getting on the end of a free kick, denied by the feet of the keeper. However the lead was doubled 5 minutes later, Ross' prodigious throw reached Josh at the near post and the midfielder's header was precise into the bottom corner.
Chaps threw players forward in search of a way back into the game and nearly conceded a third on the break, another terrific tackle and pass from Sam L released Ben his cross was dummied by Liam and Steve fired over the bar. Next George nicked the ball away from the centre half and raced through but the keeper saved really bravely. Sam L then went through in similar circumstances but again was denied a goal that he deserved by the feet of the keeper and that of the centre half.
Just as it seemed that the game was heading for a comfortable 2-0 win, Chaps battled back through their midfielder, his shot from the edge of the box left Damon no chance. There was some nervousness on the sidelines but their were no further alarms and the boys were able to celebrate a deserved win.
Man of the Match - George and Sam L - George's pace caused problems all game and his goal was well deserved. Sam L put in a real powerhouse performance in the midfield area. Well done boys.
28/03/10
Coundon Court 0-5 St Nicolas Colts (A)
A meeting with St Nics after such a poor performance during the previous week is probably not what the doctor ordered! But there was nothing to lose as the lions were massive underdogs for this cup quarter final tie. The important thing was to get through the first few minutes and play our way into the game, unfortunately the game was over inside 15 minutes.
With a strong wind at their backs St Nics pressed us back and a goal kick was won by the St Nics midfield and a simple header over the top left the striker with an easy finish.
It was 2-0 just 5 minutes later when a corner wasn't dealt with leading to a lashed finish. There were few bright attacking moves for the Lions and St Nics added two more with the first half not even half way over. Damon made a couple of super saves to keep it at 4-0 and the boys began to show some fight. They got through to half time and with the wind in their favour, the play was more even in the second half. Liam had one chance from Ross' free kick but St Nics still looked the more likely scorers. However determined defending and good goalkeeping from Damon kept the scoreline the same until the last minute where St Nics added a fifth.
A disappointing performance, the boys simply didn't compete in the early stages but confidence is low and they should take heart from the way they battled in the second half.
21/03/10
Coundon Court 0-2 Copsewood (H)
A real low point for the boys as they crashed to a crushing defeat to Copsewood. In truth the boys had enough of the play and the chances in the first half to have put the game beyond reach but some terrific saves from the Copsewood keeper and a lack of confidence from the boys generally meant another poor result.
Liam was denied twice in the first half by the keeper and Ben saw a corner scrambled off the line though the suggestion was that it had gone in, the referee was not in any position to see. There were other scrambles from Ben's set piece deliveries but nobody could add the finishing touch.
The second half started with more of the same, George and Liam again denied by good goalkeeping and Ben's free kick was only a couple of inches away form the top corner, but Copsewood were gaining in confidence. With 15 minutes to go a freak incident left Josh with a broken arm and George a broken nose and a minute later Copsewood took the lead after Damon made a super save initially. The boys threw men forward and a misjudgement from Daniel left the striker clear on goal in the last minute to give the scoreline an unrealistic look.
As difficult as it is the boys have to pick themselves up and battle on.
7/03/10
Coundon Court 0-3 Rugby Town (H)
The boys were very slow out of the blocks in the opening ten minutes and had Damon to thank for keeping the scores level making two fine saves. Second to every ball and unable to threaten against a stiff breeze it was no surprise when Rugby did take the lead, Damon again saving the first effort and unfortunate to see the follow up beat him and Daniel on the line. Gradually the boys got a foothold in the game and a clever turn and shot by Liam beat the goalkeeper but also the far post by the matter of inches. The boys might then have had a penalty, the goalkeeper clearly brought down Liam but the referee deemed he was already in an offside position, it was probably the correct decision though the Rugby linesman thought otherwise.
With 5 minutes to the half time break came the turning point of the match, some good play released Josh through one on one, he appeared to do everything right and slid the ball past the goalkeeper and was stunned to see the ball come back off the post.
Within a minute it was 2-0, a throw in was defended poorly and though Mitch got across to block the shot, the ball cannoned off his foot and up over the stranded Damon.
With the elements in their favour the boys set about the next 35 minutes dominating territory and possession but did not create quite enough. Three terrific chances came and went though, George with a free header found only the goalkeepers hands, Daniel from an even better position beat the goalkeeper but headed narrowly over and the Steve went through but hit a stinging shot straight at the keeper.
Though Damon only touched the ball three times in the second half, one of them was to pick the ball out of the net with just 4 minutes left as the boys threw everyone forward. The Rugby striker had the freedom of one half of the pitch and strolled forward to give the scoreline an unrealistic look.
Man of the Match - Daniel - Settling into his new role
14/02/10
Coundon Court 0-1 Athletic United (H)
The Lions lost out in heartbreaking fashion conceding with almost the last kick of the game in a competitive encounter.
With Ben away and Liam carrying an injury, it was a below strength Coundon side that took on the red league newcomers. The game was even throughout with chances hard to come by for both sides. The first chance of the half fell to the home side, terrific play in the midfield released George and his low cross was met at full stretch by Liam but from close range the ball found the side netting. Athletic are a big side and very direct in their play looking to launch the ball over the top at every opportunity for their talented striker, who was superbly marshalled by the home defence. They weren't helped by the tendency to run offside. They did fashion one chance when the central midfielder burst through but under pressure his shot was tame and straight at Damon.
With Athletic making the most of their long throw expert they did have the better of the territory in the first half but failed to register any more real opportunities on goal with the Lions rising to the challenge to head everything away, Luke excelling in that area along with Josh. At the other end the best opportunity of the match fell after a mix up in the Athletic defence, unfortunately George and Josh, in their eagerness rather got in each others way on the 6-yard line and with the goal gaping, the Athletic keeper was able to fall on the half hit shot.
The second half saw the Lions push Athletic back but the Athletic defence was equally as resolute as the home side's and though there were half chances the only clear chance saw George run clear on goal but on the bobbly surface, his touch was heavy and the goalkeeper was able to smother.
At the other end Athletic did hit the woodwork after a weak shot took a huge deflection but the Coundon defence was generally well on top.
It took a mistake from a goal kick to present the Athletic striker with the chance to win the game, with Daniel out of position he wasn't able to get to the centre forward who finished superbly to win the game. It was testament to Daniel's play that this was the only chance the talented striker had in the game. Alongside him Mitch, Ross and Adam had performed terrifically well and looked a really solid unit.
It was desperately hard on the boys, who had more than matched Athletic all over the pitch and a draw would have been the fair result. Unfortunately that isn't how football works and we lick our wounds and back at full strength we look forward to our next game.
Man of the Match - Daniel - Flawless....almost
7/02/10
Coundon Court 2-1 Rugby Town Juniors (H)
The boys reached the last eight of the Coventry Minor League Cup on Sunday with a hard fought 2-1 win over Rugby Town. Trailing at the break, the boys rallied with two second half goals to edge a tight, competitive contest.
The early stages saw both sides feeling each other out and neither goalkeeper was tested until the latter stages of the half. Although defences were largely on top there were some half chances for either side, Ben was put through but on his less favoured left foot he blazed well wide. At the other end the Rugby striker had a sight of goal but the end result was much the same. Whilst Rugby were having the better possession, the clearest chances fell to the Lions. The best being Ben's turn and shot which narrowly evaded the far post and Liam as he closed in.
7 minutes before the break the deadlock was broken with a fantastic goal. A cross was headed away to the edge of the box where the Rugby midfielder met it with a screaming left foot volley that arrowed into the top corner. A strike that would not have looked out of place at any level of football.
Despite this blow the boys responded in the right way and ended the half in the ascendany if not on level terms. Liam had a sight of goal but turned back onto his left foot and his shot was blocked away. This led to a sustained period of pressure without any end product.
The early stages of the second half followed a similar pattern with Rugby in control of the territory and possession but not creating any chances, the back four led by Mitch playing extremely well. The boys were warming to the task though and with Steve beginning to pull the strings in midfield, the Lions were beginning to get on top. It might have been all square when Josh rose highest to meet Ben's corner delivery but from close range headed just the wrong side of the post.
With 15 minutes left it was 1-1, Liam clearly brought down when through on goal, picked himself up to level the scores. Now the Lions were having the better of things, Haig fired inches wide of the right hand post as the boys pressed forward, but the turning point came at the other end. Good play released the Rugby striker and he looked bound to score only to be denied by a stunning one handed save by Damon.
Immediately play switched to the other end and the tie was settled in bizarre circumstances, George blocked a Rugby clearance and both players watched as the ball flew 15 yards over the stranded keeper and into the net.
The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Rugby players and with Ross supporting the front players, the Lions created 3-4 good chances in quick succession, with the Rugby keeper equal to all of them.
There were no more alarms and the boys just about deserved to edge an entertaining contest.
A good, spirited performance . We hope to see more in the coming weeks.
Man of the Match - Mitch - Seemed to be everywhere across the backline
24/01/10
Coundon Court 1-2 Weddington Thistle (H)
The first action of 2010 proved to be another close battle with newcomers Weddington, after a narrow 2-1 defeat in November.
Buoyed by the early lead Thistle continued to press though most of their opportunities were limited to shots from around the edge of the area. Damon forced into one terrific save. Gradually the boys worked their way into the game with Liam proving a real handful, his strong running on the left saw him evade the full back and curl in a delightful cross for Ben to head in from close range.
The boys enjoyed their best period of the game in the following minutes, first Steve and then Josh broke into the box on the left but both could only find the keeper rather than the unmarked strikers.
At the other end Thistle clipped the bar but it was level at the break.
Even with just four minutes left the boys rallied and they were able to create the most clear cut chance of the game, Haig through on goal but unable to finish.
Man of the Match - Liam – Lively throughout
13/12/09
Coundon Court 1-6 St Nicolas Colts (H)
A second meeting with last seasons league and cup winners was an unenviable way to finish the year and unfortunately the boys were unable to push this fine side the way they had last season.
A second minute goal did not help with the striker afforded far too much space to rifle in a half volley. For the rest of the half the boys competed well, though St Nics had the majority of possession their only real sight of goal was a fierce drive which forced Damon into an excellent near post save. At the other end Liam led the line with real heart and his hooked volley worried the keeper for a moment as it passed the far post. It was cruel on the boys that the lead was doubled right on the stroke of half time. There were 2 or 3 chances to clear but the cross was allowed to come in and with the boys appealing for offside the striker finished from close range.
With the elements in their favour for the second period the Lions tried to force the issue but were susceptible to St Nics pace on the break and in the space of 5 minutes the game was over as a contest, 2-0 became 4-0. The boys never gave in and continued to force St Nics back without creating too many chances. Liam forced the keeper into a sprawling save when well placed and a series of free kicks produced little, Josh's effort which clipped the top of the net the closest effort. LIAM did grab a goal that his efforts deserved but two late goals from the pacy St Nics striker closed out the game.
A tough game against big, strong opponents who are going to challenge on all fronts this season. Some pleasing points to our play but we have to cut out some basic mistakes and improve in the New Year.
Man of the Match - Josh– Great energy in the midfield area

Coundon Court 1-2 Weddington Thistle (A)
A stirring second half performance was unable to rescue a point for the lions as they succumbed to a narrow defeat at Weddington. A defensive error gifted an early lead to the home side with an attempted pass finding only the feet of the striker and his speculative first time shot sailed over Damon.
Boosted by the goal Weddington were the dominant force for the following minutes and had a number of half chances without forcing Damon into a save. Gradually the boys began to get a foothold in the game with Liam's movement causing the Weddingto defence problems. Haig fired well wide on the angle and Ayo's terrific cross cut out defenders and strikers alike. With around 12 minutes to the break a real turning point. Liam was through on goal before being cynically tripped by the full back. Unbelievably the referee saw nothing wrong and as the Lions stopped Weddington broke and scored.
It was a real bitter pill to swallow and made worse less than 5 minutes later when the same player committed an even more cynical foul on Liam when he was clear on goal again. Haigs free kick was saved and an unhappy set of boys trooped in at half time 2-0 down.
The sense of injustice fired up the boys for the second half and they were much the better side, led by Mitch's committed defending they pinned the home side back. The arrears were reduced when ROSS was quickest to react in the six yard box after a scramble from a corner.
The Lions poured forward again, Steve burst through on the keeper and was desperately unlucky to see the ball bobble as he set himself to shoot firing over the bar. Liam's first touch was good after Haig's pinpoint cross but his finish in the sticky penalty area was fielded comfortably by the keeper.
Those were the two best opportunities but the goal wouldnt come and the boys will feel hard done to getting no points from the game.
However the resilience and determination shown in the second half will stand us in good stead if we can replicate it for the rest of the season.
Man of the Match - Mitch– Terrific determined attitude
22/11/09
Coundon Court 0-2 Leamington Hibs (H)
After a run of determined performances in recent weeks, the boys went down tamely to old foes Leamington Hibs. Two headed goal from corners were the difference with Hibs defending their lead stoutly in the second half.
From the off the lions were second to the ball and the hardworking Hibs team deserved their lead, the two forwards finishing excellent corner deliveries to establish a 2-0 lead midway through the first half. Chances were few and far between for the Lions, Haig shot hurriedly when well placed but despite some promising approach play the final ball was not good and too often too close to the goalkeeper.
Mitch made one goalline clearance but neither side were creating too much from open play. The Lions became the dominant force in the second half, Liam was a little ambitious with one strike when he might have carried the ball forward and the keeper smothered well when he was put through after good work by George.
The boys continued to push forward and Josh shot just wide before Liam was crudely brought down when clear on goal. A free kick from just outside the box scant reward for good forward play and Ben's shot hit the top of the net.
A disappointing performance, particularly in the first half but all credit to Hibs who played with great energy and determination and deserved the three points.
Man of the Match - Josh – Showed good fighting spirit.

Coundon Court 5-0 Athletic United (A)
For the second successive week the boys displayed a real clinical edge to their attacking play and this combined with brilliant goalkeeping and gritty defending proved to be the difference in a hard fought contest that was much closer than the scoreline suggests.
Haig scored his first hat-trick for the club and George and Liam added late goals to give the scoreline a pleasing look.
Athletic were first into their stride on a small pitch that they are clearly accustomed to. The narrowness meant a large number of throw ins, which given the Rory Delap nature of the midfielder meant anything within 20 yards of goal was hurled into the six yard box. It meant that there was little flow to the early play but plenty of defending to do for the back four. Athletic are a big, powerful side and were using that strength to pin the Lions back and they forced a string of fine saves from Damon who must count this display as one of his finest for the club. He dived to his left to tip round the post and then upwards to turn another scorching drive over the bar before instinctively blocking a low shot with his legs.
When the boys did get the ball down, they played some pleasing football and always looked dangerous going forward. Haig had one effort blocked when in a good position and then a probing pass forced the defender to clear behind under pressure from Liam. From the resulting corner HAIG's delivery proved difficult to defend and found the corner of the net via the fist of the goalkeeper.
Athletic continued to press forward but 1-0 remained the half time score.
The initial stages of the second period was more even with the play centred mainly in the midfield third, Athletic continued to threaten though had a tendency to run (often a long way), offside. Damon watched another effort go just wide and the Athletic forward saw an effort graze the bar. Midway through the second half the lead was doubled, Daniel won the ball and picked out HAIG's run and his finish was terrific leaving the goalkeeper no chance.
Athletic cranked it up for a 10 minute spell and one scramble incredibly stayed out via a combination of Damon, committed defending and the inside of the post. Daniel then made one fantastic saving tackle when the striker was through.
Having absorbed the pressure the Lions hit Athletic on the break again, Mitch brought the ball out of defence and found Josh who picked out GEORGE's run and he finished superbly. Understandably Athletic wilted, clearly it wasn't their day and the boys played some excellent football in the last 10 minutes. Liam waltzed round the keeper and crossed for George who fired wide from a tight angle and then terrific build up play started by Mitch again saw Adam, Ben and Liam all involved on the right. Liam's cross found George and when his effort was blocked HAIG was on hand to complete a fine hat trick.
A fifth goal followed just a minute from time and a pleasing one too, LIAM's hard work in recent weeks has not produced the goals that he deserved but he showed terrific ability to go past two defenders and picked out the top corner with his sidefoot finish.
5-0 flattered the Lions today, but the result was built on really gritty defending , tremendous goalkeeping and clinical attacking play.
Man of the Match - Damon – Simply unbeatable today
8/11/09
Coundon Court 4-1 Cov Jag 2004 (A)
The boys comfortably progressed into the last 16 of the Minor League cup with an impressive display against Cov Jag 2004. Having played poorly against the same opposition earlier in the season escaping with a draw, it was a chance to see what progress had been made in the intervening period.
The boys got off to a fast start and any doubts about having not scored in the previous two games were immediately erased with a two goal salvo inside the opening 10 minutes. JOSH was first to react to the ball breaking 30 yards from goal and he drove between the two centre halves and into the box where his powerful shot almost went through the goalkeeper.
A second goal followed, good play on the left initially by Ben and Steve led to HAIG crossing from the left and the defender could do little else than put through his own goal. A two goal lead was just what the boys needed and they relaxed and played some fine football. One sweeping move led to a cross from the right which Liam met perfectly on the half volley and his sidefoot finish was desperately unlucky to hit the inside of the post and stay out.
Jag were finding it hard to create anything and their only effort on goal was a shot from the edge of the area which Damon pushed away, Ben was smartly in to block the rebound.
At the other end Liam's subtle chip was kept out and Luke couldn't get his shot away with enough power as the ball broke 6 yards out in a goalmouth scramble.
2-0 would have been a fair reflection of the half but in stoppage time before half time, Jag got a break. A sloppily conceded corner was not defended well leaving the winger to head in and reduce the arrears and give the home side some momentum for the second half.
However this failed to galvanise Jag and the Lions took complete control of the play. George seized on a defensive mistake but under pressure screwed his shot wide and Brad fired over on the angle. A third goal was needed to seal the game and it came courtesy of DANIEL, a third headed goal from a corner this season ended Jag's resistance. Josh and Liam both found themselves in good positions but were just unable to get the ball out of their feet and Stevie went sprawling in the area whilst on a mazy run. A fourth goal capped off a good performance as time expired. A fine run and cross from Josh saw BRAD get across the defender to divert it first time into the net for a really good finish.
A very pleasing display, defensively sound, mature in our passing and adventurous in our forward play. Well done boys.
Man of the Match – Josh – One goal and an assist in an energetic performance.
1/11/09
Coundon Court 0-0 Kenilworth Wardens (H)
A second league meeting with Kenilworth Wardens in successive week and once again the wind largely spoiled a tight and competitive fixture.
With the blustery wind just about favouring the Lions, the boys started on the front foot. Liam saw a snapshot fly high over the bar and George's pacey running was causing problems on the Wardens right side and one run and cross only narrowly evaded Haig at the far post. However the bulk of play was in the midfield area which was very competitive with neither side gaining enough space to create too many chances. Wardens mounted some decent counter attacks but never got close enough for a proper sight of goal and any shots they had were from distance and well handled by Damon.
The clearer chances of the first period came at the other end, George released Liam but the keeper got enough on his save to allow the defender to get back and clear off the line. The closest to a goal was Josh, he timed his run superbly to head in a free kick, but the whistle had already gone for offside, as another active player was in an offside position.
The second half was going to be more difficult as the wind had become more consistent in favour of the visitors. Despite this, the back four who were terrific throughout, kept them at arms lengths and the boys enjoyed a 15-minute spell where they had the better of the territory. Chances were still hard to come by though, the best of them being Liam forcing the keeper into a sprawling save whilst Brad capped an excellent move involving Luke, Liam and Josh, by sidefooting just wide.
With 10 minutes left Wardens began to press strongly and finished the game well on top. Their tall striker had one sight of goal but his shot was fielded comfortably by Damon and with time running out they came closest to a goal. A powerful shot came in from just outside the box and rebounded off Damon to the left winger, who had been offside throughout the move despite his smart finish and his effort was correctly ruled out.
A draw was probably about the right result, the boys can take heart from an improved defensive display with Ben particularly outstanding. At the other end the lions probably shaded the clear cut chances but Wardens deserved a share of the spoils.
Man of the Match – Ben - powerful performance both going forward and in defence
25/10/09
Coundon Court 0-1 Kenilworth Wardens (A)
A much improved performance after last week's dismal showing and it was rough justice on the boys that they left with nothing to show for their efforts as they largely dominated the contest.
With a strong breeze blowing directly down the pitch, the first half was going to be difficult with Wardens a well organised and combative side profiting from the elements first.
The start was understandably tentative from the boys and the play was much more in the Lions half, but there were few alarms and the defending was fairly comfortable. Damon had to push one good long range effort wide but as the half continued the boys began to play with a bit more confidence and began to probe down both flanks. Liam's cross was met by Haig but on the stretch his effort was short on power. Then Steve fired just over the bar as the boys looked lively on the break. Luke and Josh in the central area were winning a number of headers from long kicks and things were looking solid.
With the wind at their back Wardens were though doing most of the pressing and Daniel showed good recovery speed to rob the striker as he set himself to shoot and a minute later a dangerous cross eluded everyone at the far post. The deadlock was broken with 10 minutes to the break, a corner was partially cleared and a shot from the edge of the box rebounded back off Damon and the midfielder was first to react to smash in the follow up.
Confidence visibly wilted for a couple of minutes but the boys gathered themselves and began to make forays forward. Liam linked with Josh and Haig on the left and curled a delightful effort over the keeper and was desperately unlucky to see a defender head onto the underside of the bar and away.
1-0 down at the break but a strong breeze at our backs suggested that we were well in the game. The second half was one of complete domination with Damon almost a complete spectator. At the other end, Steve fired a dipping effort just over, Haig fired a free kick wide and Brad shot into the keepers midriff at the near post. He then had a fantastic opportunity as a crossfield pass found him free in the box, but his effort grazed the wrong side of the post.
Warden's defending was desperate but effective, Liam's cross looked destined to be headed in by Haig at the far post but a defender got back and headed over his own bar. More scrambles ensued and Ben who had an impressive game had a vicious right foot shot brilliantly turned round the post. Daniel timed his run perfectly to meet the ensuing corner but his steered volley from 7 yards came off his shin and back out of play.
As time ebbed away our play became more desperate when it called for a little more composure. There were three good shouts for penalties turned down, the best of which saw Haig go round the goalkeeper and go down under challenge. A corner was the result, though it was clear that the keeper made no contact with the ball.
Time ran out with the score still in Warden's favour but we played far better today and looked a much more cohesive unit.
Man of the Match – Haig- Strong running from the leftsided player

Coundon Court 1-7 Haunchwood (H)
A really miserable afternoon for the boys as they were hammered by Haunchwood in the second round of the Bedworth Nursing Cup. Nothing went right as the boys were outplayed and outfought by a physically stronger and more determined team that were well worth their margin of victory.
The first 2-3 minutes saw the play mainly in the Haunchwood half, but from then on the visitors controlled the game. They scored four goals in a 20-minute spell that ended the game as a contest, good goals from their point of view but all defendable from ours, including two from set pieces and one after Macca had forced their keeper into a fine save. Immediately the ball was transferred to the other end and the ball was in the net within seconds.
The boys rallied for a 5-10 minute period, putting together one or two decent pieces of football, most noticeably 5-6 passes that released Luke on the right but his cross found only the keeper.
The only bright spot was a goal just before half time when LIAM turned and hit a vicious shot that the goalkeeper parried against the post and just over the line, though Haig was on hand to make sure that it was over. However the referee confirmed later that he had given the goal already.
The second half saw little improvement and the visitors notched a further three goals and there was little created at the other end.
No complaints about the scoreline, Haunchwood go on in the competition with our best wishes for them to do well. Their play was excellent and they were quicker and hungrier for the ball, their finishing too was very good.
A humbing experience, the boys collectively played poorly, but what we have to see when the going gets tough is that there is 100% effort and collective responsibility rather than a blame culture.
This group of boys are unchanged predominantly from the lads that completed last season playing some decent football against good opposition. We have to stick together and work hard and battle out of this poor spell starting on Sunday.
Man of the Match - Mitch/Ayo - Determination from these two players
11/10/09
Coundon Court 3-2 Grove Farm Juniors (H)
Finally the boys recorded a home league victory and a well deserved one at that, with Steve's strike worthy of winning any game.
The boys started brightly and controlled the game in the early stages, George's hard work on the right created some good opportunities to deliver crosses in the final third whilst Steve and Liam were linking well on the left side. It was Steve who was the main source of chances as he first skipped past his marker but mishit his shot. He then saw an effort balloon off the defender and land on the roof of the net. Brad then picked him out with a terrific pass, Steve's first touch was fantastic but he dragged is shot just wide.
Grove Farm relied on the pacey lone striker as their attacking outlet and he kept Mitch on his toes. Against the run of play the visitors took the lead, from a throw in a cross was allowed to creep across the box where the winger stole in unmarked. His sidefoot shot from around 10 yards was well struck but Damon made a fantastic effort to save, getting a hand to it and unluckily seeing the ball creep over the line.
Undeterred the boys continued to attack forcing a series of corners, from the last Ross chested down and hit a good right foot shot just wide. Brad then saw a fierce drive deflected away before Liam fired a free kick just high and wide.
Just as it looked as though half time would come with the Lions 1-0 down, Steve found Liam whose cross was volleyed in from close range by BRAD, for the midfielders third goal of the season. A good reward for some sustained pressure.
Grove Farm came out strongly in the second half and were the better side for the first 10 minutes, the defending was largely good though Damon made one fine save from a long distance effort getting down smartly to turn the ball wide. The boys continued to press but without the cutting edge that they had in the first half and when in good positions to cross the chance seemed to go begging.
Still level with around 15 minutes left, Brad's corner was glanced on by Daniel and hit a defender and went in. However 2-1 leads don't seem to suit as at the moment and despite looking comfortable in defence for most of the game, Grove Farm levelled again. Damon did well to punch clear a corner but we were slow to close down and the striker finished well from a tight angle.
Heads might have gone down but the Lions continued to show some determination to wrestle away all three points. Luke did well to get in a cross and the ball was only half cleared to STEVE who hit a magnificent curling effort into the top corner to win the match.
A well deserved win and hopefully some much needed confidence. We are still making too many defensive errors and need to concentrate to stamp them out.
Man of the Match - Liam & Mitch - Liam lively performance linking the play. Mitch not 100% fit but nobody would have known!
4/10/09
Coundon Court 1-4 Coventry Sphinx (H)
The boys disappointing run continued with a home defeat to Coventry Sphinx. The scoreline did not really reflect the game and there was little between the teams for large parts of the game.
The first half saw Sphinx having more of the possession but not really threatening the goal too much. Early on their striker burst through but from the edge of the box fired tamely wide and shortly afterwards a long range speculative effort was just too high. At the other end some quick passing and a good set from Brad enabled Daniel to get a snapshot in that was only inches wide. Steve then broke through on two occasions and forced the goalkeeper into sprawling saves. George also robbed the keeper but in the scramble that followed Sphinx defended well to end the danger.
The visitors took the lead around 12 minutes to the break with a goal that has been symptomatic of our season. We had 2-3 opportunities to clear but after Daniel made a fine tackle, nobody closed down the second ball and the winger shot home despite Damon's best efforts.
The second half saw the Lions reverse the trend and have the better of the play without creating too many chances. Ben such a reliable freekick taker had an opportunity 20 yards from goal but his effort was disappointing probably owing to the fact that he aggravated a groin injury as he struck the ball.
The second Sphinx goal was the killer, a long straight ball seemed to be well defended by Mitch, but he was bundled to the ground and the striker left to an easy finish. They added a third on the break, extremely well finished by the impressive left sided player. The boys did get some reward for their efforts with 5 minutes to go, Josh flicked on a free kick and HAIG rifled in his first goal of the season.
Sphinx scored a fourth with the last kick of the game. Despite the linesman's flag, the referee inexplicably decided to play on and with players from both sides having stopped the midfielder had an easy finish.
Another defeat and the same problems of too many poor goal conceded. For the most part we defend well and then commit a defensive error that is punished. Not all of the problems are with the defence though and we have to defend better as a team, starting with the strikers putting pressure across the opposition back four and the midfield working hard to close down players. We have had a bad run and need to stick together and show some determination to come through it.
Man of the Match - Brad - Having a consistent run of good form
20/09/09
Coundon Court 2-2 Cov Jag 2004 (H)
The boys put in a desperately disappointing first half performance to leave themselves chasing a game for the third time this season and only a steely determination ensured that they grabbed a share of the spoils.
Cov Jag clearly came with a game plan to get men behind the ball and their tactics worked brilliantly in the early stages. They broke from defence very quickly and were lively in the final third. It was Brad though who had the first effort on goal he strode forward and hit a fearsome drive which whistled over the bar, Steve was next to try his luck though his shot from the edge of the box was easily fielded by the keeper.
However as Jag gained in confidence they were the dominant force and created a number of good chances. The right wing back got clear and rolled his shot just wide before Damon was called into action for the first time smothering a low shot. The Lions seemed to lose all confidence, panicking in possession and failing to pass the ball and it was no surprise when an opening Jag goal came. Daniel made a very good clearing header but the midfielder was allowed to get in a second cross and another midfielder had the time and space to bring the ball down and pick his spot. Liam tried to rally the boys with a snap shot that was just wide before Brad tried his luck from distance. However Jag doubled their lead when more disappointing defending allowed the breaking midfielder through on goal and suddently their was a mountain to climb.
Gradually the boys began to get a grip in the midfield area and Haig's cross was bravely headed in by BRAD, just beating the onrushing keeper to the ball.
The second half was predominantly played in the Jag half, though the boys didn't create masses of chances and Jag still looked lively on the break.
Steve had a good impact on the left side and he twice got free in the early stages but one cross was just too close to the keeper and the other almost picked out Bradley's head as he stretched forward. Ayo's strong running on the right was also proving useful and he was unfortunate when with the keeper committed, the ball bounced back off the defender into the keeper's arms.
The closest to an equaliser came when George flicked on Josh's corner and with the goal open the ball struck Steve's head as he landed and bounced to safety.
With five minutes remaining though it was all square as Ayo's persistence led to a hasty clearance, George laid the ball back to Macca and his sidefooted shot was diverted into the net by the onrushing STEVE.
There were no more chances at either end and it finished 2-2.
The boys know themselves that they didn't play well and we have conceded too many goals. They seem to have lost a little confidence in themselves and need to remember that they are all good footballers and should trust their first touch and to pick a pass. However what is not in question is their resilience and the way in which they hauled themselves back into a game without ever playing well should be a real boost to them.
Man of the Match - Steve - Big impact in the second half
20/09/09
Coundon Court 2-2 Christ the King (H)
A fortnight into the season and we finally got to play in Coventry and at home! A visit from our local rivals Christ the King always makes for a large support and a lively atmosphere and today was no different.
In recent times, we have had much the better of things with only 1 defeat in the last 7 meetings between the two sides, which was the corresponding fixture last season. Players and coaches are still shaking their heads at how that game was lost!
Today's game saw Steve back into the starting eleven in his familiar central role and he looked back to fitness and form in the early stages helping the midfield four control the play. Despite an encouraging start, it was Christ the King who broke away on the right to create the first clear chance and the pacey winger got in on goal but was denied by an excellent block from Damon.
At the other end George made good space for himself and his cross shot just evaded the stretching Haig. Haig then fired a cross shot wide when well paced before having a headed chance. Knowing the wingers prowess in the air everyone was surprised he did not make more of the chance, though the low sun directly in his eyes perhaps gave a clue.
As the home side continued to press, both Liam and Daniel forced sprawling saves from the increasingly worked goalkeeper before Josh's ambitious drive just cleared the bar. On the break CTK remained a threat and the striker forced Damon into another fine save with a shot from the edge of the box.
It was the Lions though who generally carried the greater attacking threat and some good passing released Liam and his exquisite pass to BRAD invited the winger to cut in and fire into the corner of the net to establish a deserved lead. It was a lead that was to last until 10 minutes into the second half and might have been doubled when a fantastic pass from Bradley sent Liam clear and the striker saw his shot roll agonisingly wide of the post with the goalkeeper stranded.
Just a minute later it was all square when the Kings striker muscled his way to the byeline before sending in a hopeful cross, which left Damon no chance as it hit the far post and dropped in. More shaking of heads as for a second successive season Kings scored a freak goal against us.
The boys rolled their sleeves up and established the lead for the second time, a great tackle by Brad enabled Luke to play in LIAM and he made no mistake.
Midway through the second half the Kings centre back left the field with a head injury and the boys concentration seemed to drop and CTK made us pay immediately, a long crossfield pass enabled the pacey striker to run clear and force a second equaliser.
Buoyed by this the Kings impressive left back hit a fierce freekick, which was well parried by Damon and they put us under considerable pressure in the last 7-8 minutes though did not carve out any clear opportunities. In fact the chances to win it came at the other end with a long range free kick from Brad well handled by the keeper and then he made an even better save from Macca's fine drive with time running out.
All square and an entertaining game between two fairly evenly matched teams, the home side know that they should have won this one having led twice and will rue lapses in concentration that led to equalisers.
Man of the Match - Mitch - Restored to full fitness and back to his best
13/09/09
Coundon Court 3-2 Leamington Hibs (A)
Relief all round as the boys got their season with a first win in a hard-fought match with long time foes Leamington Hibs. The teams have met three times in each of the last two seasons with the Lions just holding the upper hand and were hoping to extend their league winning run over Hibs to three games.
The game got off to a quiet start with most of the play in the midfield area, there was evidence of some good play particularly down our right side with Bradley linking up with the two strikers but chances were few and far between. Liam having a half chance as he broke into the box and showed quick feet to make himself a shooting opportunity which was well clutched by the goalkeeper.
Just 10 minutes in though the deadlock was broken DANIEL striding onto the ball some 25 yards from goal and clipping a lofted effort towards goal that beat the stranded keeper and nestled into the corner. It seemed to give the boys some much needed confidence and they had the better of the next few minutes culminating in GEORGE outpacing the defence to latch onto Daniel's through ball and finishing past the keeper. He nearly repeated the feat but a good defensive block saw the shot rebound away from goal.
Just as we looked to be comfortable Hibs worked their way back into the game, they have some fine attacking players and created a couple of reasonable shooting chances before they got a goal back. The striker making room for himself in the box and finishing well. This gave them renewed hope and they definitely had the better of the first half from then on and equalised shortly before the break, a ball played through the middle seemed initially to have too much on it but it held up to allow the striker to poke past the advancing Damon.
The second half was a much more even affair, Hibs might have shaded the possession but the clearer chances came at the other end. Lovely play and a fine ball from Liam found Steve but when clear, he could not keep his shot down on his weaker side.
With around 15 minutes to go the game was settled in our favour, Adam playing a delightful through ball for LIAM to expertly lift over the keeper to keep his extraordinary scoring run going against Hibs.
He had the chance to put the result beyond doubt again showing quickness to round the keeper but on his weaker foot his shot from a tight angle was just wide.
Hibs threatened an equaliser but their play became increasingly more desperate and led by a committed back four the boys held out. Their only real chance of an equaliser came in the last minute when Ross was injured in a tackle. The ball was immediately switched wide to the space usually occupied by the full back and from the subsequent cross the striker helped the ball just wide.
A battling performance earnt us the win against committed opponents and we take that spirit on into the next run of fixtures.
Man of the Match - Josh - Great drive and determination
9/09/09
Coundon Court 1-3 Grove Farm (A)
A catastrophic first half performance left the boys 3-0 down and completely out of the game, yet despite this a second half fightback might even have led to us taking all three points. The early stages saw the boys pressing Grove Farm back without looking threatening though Liam did see a free kick well fielded by the goalkeeper at the near post. However the home side began to get on top though it was poor defending that led to the opening goal. Defenders didnt take responsibility for the ball and allowed a striker to nip and his cross was easily headed home.
Heads went down and we conceded 2 more in a short spell, again there was a lack of conviction in our own area and Damon was left unprotected. It could have been even worse as a long shot cannoned off the bar and down to safety as the boys looked completely shellshocked.
It was a matter of trying to rebuild confidence at half time and asking the boys simply to go out and play with heart and to a player they did this. The first five minutes was fairly even, but after that driven on by Josh and Luke it was all Lions pressure. Liam went through and was denied by a terrific point blank block and then was a man on the mission as twice he picked the ball up 30 yards from goal and weaved his way forward before firing just wide.
George was the next to try his luck and Haig's cross picked him out and his shot beat the keeper but not the post.
The whole feel of the match had changed and Grove Farm were hanging on. Midway through the second half a goal eventually came, DANIEL's looping header from Haig's corner finding the roof of the net with the keeper only able to help it in.
Still the boys pressed forward, there were occasional raids by the lively Grove Farm forwards but better defending limited any chances.
Ayo shot into the side netting and Josh seemed certain to score when his scuffed header was blocked on the line by the desperate goalkeeper.
The overworked Grove Farm defence did a very good job though as they blocked a huge number of shots, Macca, Daniel D and Liam all suffering this fate. Haig broke through but his clever chip was well read by the goalkeeper.
With 3 minutes to go the game seemed lost but there was still time for Liam to see one final effort fizz just over the bar and George to be denied a certain penalty as the defender barged into him making no attempt to play the ball. However the referee, who had a perfect view of it deemed it a fair challenge.
A disappointing evening, particularly the way we capitulated in the first half, but hopefully the way that we played in the second half can give the boys some belief back.
Man of the Match - Luke - Growing into his midfield role
6/09/09
Coundon Court 1-4 St Nicolas Colts (A)
A very disappointing start to the season, not particularly the result, we certainly won't be the last team to come away from the defending champions empty-handed, but the manner of the defeat. Hopes were high in advance of the meeting as we thought back to the final game of last season which saw us lose 4-2 at the same ground, though the result was in doubt right up to the final minute on that occasion. This season though was very different.
The Lions gave league debuts to Daniel D and Luke with Ben and Ayo both missing. The opening 10 minutes were very quiet with neither goalkeeper called into action, but as the wind at St Nics backs strengthened so did their play. They controlled the midfield area launching a number of attacks which the back four did well to repel. However the opening goal came in soft fashion with a free header afforded after a needlessly conceded corner.
Forays forward were few and far between though George was through on goal but the ball bounced awkwardly on his left foot and ran through to the goalkeeper. St Nics were pressing and were gifted a second goal 8 minutes before the break, which proved to be crucial. Indecision in the home ranks left the striker with a simple finish.
Heads went down and a third goal quickly followed after good approach play and a fine finish. 3-0 down at the break and there was only pride left to play for.
Though the wind dipped a little the boys did show some fight and began to match the Colts in the midfield area and win the ball higher up the pitch and it was a much more even contest. Despite this St Nics added a fourth, a half cleared corner was whipped back in and a stooping header put the game well out of reach.
For the last 20 minutes the Lions did have the better of things, Haig forced the keeper into a full length save after good passing, then Liam broke into the box and shot just wide. George was next to try his luck coming in from an acute angle he forced the keeper into a good save with his legs. A goal was deserved and came with around 8 minutes left, George's header picked out LIAM who strode onto the ball and finished with the aid of a slight deflection.
An opening day defeat but some encouragement in how the boys finished the game.
Man of the Match - Daniel - Looking in good form at the start of this season

Coundon Court 1-0 Wellesbourne (A)
The Lions completed their preseason with a well earned 1-0 win at Wellesbourne in a competitive game that was the ideal preparation for the new season to come.
With some players away on holiday, it was a still less than full strength squad that were available. The early stages saw some tentative play but the boys held the home side at arms length as they registered just a couple of long range efforts. The boys confidence increased as they grew into the game and they put together some slick passing moves. Bradley impressed on the right side and one crossfield pass found Haig in space and his shot taken quickly forced a save from the Wellesbourne keeper. Liam was also in lively mood linking well with the central midfield partnership. Daniel had perhaps the clearest chance latching onto a half cleared corner but off balance he didn't trouble the keeper.
The only goal of the game came midway through the first half, a half cleared ball was thumped into the top corner from fully 25 yards by MACCA, for his first goal for the club. The back four were in the main quite comfortable though Wellesbourne missed one terrifc chance when the strier fired high and wide from 10 yards out. The two Daniel's also combined to block another close range effort.
The second half was scrappier and noticeable for Luke's debut for the club. Wellesbourne were unable find a way through while at the other end, Ayo had the three best chances put through by George and then Liam he fired into the side netting before he met Haig's cross but was unable to get enough on it and it was cleared off the line.
A good workout for the boys, some players worked out some of the rust that a long break brings and some of our play shows that the boys are maturing in their understanding of the game.

Midland Invitational Championship - Aylestone Park
The boys travelled to Leicester for a second tilt at the prestigious Midland Championship, with players away though it was a very much depleted squad who made the trip. We thank Curtis for helping us out, and this added to quality opposition meant that it was really more a chance to gain match sharpness. On the whole the boys copeted well, St Andrews were sharper in the opening fixture and went ahead with a deflected shot. Liam had a couple of sights of goal but St Andrews added a second with a breakaway. The second game saw us take on holders Whetstone who knocked us out at the semi-final stage last year. They started slowly and the early stages saw the Lions dominating territory and possession. However their first attack saw a cross slung in and the midfielder headed towards goal from fully 18 yards to find the top corner. After this the Leicester side dominated the game and scored again with a terrific goal, a smart turn and shot from 20-yards left Damon no chance.
With pride only to play for and Steve and Macca clearly under the weather and Ross hobbling a little, the boys could have thrown the towel in, but they would have none of it. They went at Aylestone from the start in a game that was end to end throughout the 30 minutes. The only goal came when Ayo delivered a wonderful through ball for Liam, who executed the most perfect chip to win us the game. We rode our luck at times, but at the other end Ayo stung the hands of the keeper.
Overall a pleasing effort and one that typifies the way the boys have applied themselves in training this preseason.

Coundon Court 0-2 Athletic (H)
The boys slipped to preseason defeat at home to A league newcomers Athletic, though the Lions had the bulk of the possession, the visitors were more incisive on the break scoring twice in such fashion. Josh came closest to a goal as his close range header was turned onto the crossbar by the tall goalkeeper. There was some good football played but short passing was made difficult by the ridiculously long grass. However a depleted squad meant that newcomers Ao, Macca and Daniel got plenty of football with their new teammates.

Coundon Court 0-0 Alvis (H)
Although both squads were very depleted an early preseason friendly proved a good workout for all concerned. An opportunity for the Lions to look at new players was very worthwhile with Steve the most disappointed to miss out due to holiday, his record of appearing in every one of our fixtures in what will be 7 years this season was lost. It was though a good milestone for keeper Damon reaching his 100th appearance and fittingly marking it with a clean sheet.
The game was generally scrappy and there was a lot of rust in our play, there were 2 noticeable chances in the first 10 minutes, George and Daniel both shooting wide after some good play. After these 2 let-offs Alvis then had the better of the play but without creating any clear cut chances, although Mitch had to be quick to cover on 2 occasions. Towards the end of the first half Haig had a glorious chance after Ben rounded the goalkeeper but with the goal gaping he was unable to get his foot to Ben's cross shot.
Alvis played some decent football but Damon was largely untroubled and the most noticeable chances in the second half came late on, Haig shot wide as did Daniel and Brad latched onto a mishit clearance and with the keeper scrambling back his long range effort drifted wide.
With time runing out Daniel hit a fierce drive from 25 yards which was well kept out by the keeper to preserve the 0-0 scoreline.
A good workout, but clearly lots to work on before the new season.
